For most graduates who achieve licensure, yes. Licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) earn a median salary of approximately $62,000–$75,000 nationally, with experienced clinicians in private practice, hospital, or supervisory roles often exceeding $90,000. New Mexico’s higher-than-average proportion of federally funded social work employers also means access to federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) — which can eliminate remaining student loan balances after 10 years of qualifying employment, representing substantial financial value for graduates working at nonprofits, government agencies, or FQHCs.

The traditional MSW track at NMHU requires 63 credit hours at $525 per credit, totaling approximately $33,075 in tuition. The Advanced Standing track, for students with a CSWE-accredited BSW degree from within the past five years, requires only 32 credit hours — cutting both program time and total tuition to approximately $16,800. That’s a savings of over $16,000. The decision essentially comes down to whether your BSW meets the CSWE accreditation and recency requirements, and whether you’re prepared to move into clinical coursework without the foundational generalist year.

Yes, from several sources. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and affiliated organizations offer graduate scholarships specifically for MSW students, including the Minority Fellowship Program. The Facundo Valdez School of Social Work at NMHU may have departmental funding available — contact the school directly for current cycle awards. The Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Program provides stipends for MSW students committed to post-graduation employment in public child welfare in New Mexico. NMHU’s financial aid office can also advise on New Mexico-specific grants and work-study arrangements.

CSWE accreditation is essential for licensure, not optional. The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) — which administers the national licensing exams for LMSW and LCSW credentials — requires that your MSW degree come from a CSWE-accredited program as a condition of exam eligibility. Without CSWE accreditation, you cannot sit for the ASWB exam and cannot obtain licensure in any U.S. state. NMHU’s MSW program is CSWE-accredited, which means graduates meet this fundamental requirement. CSWE accreditation does not independently affect FAFSA federal financial aid eligibility — that is tied to the institution’s regional accreditation (HLC).

Many NMHU MSW students maintain employment during the online coursework portions of the program, which are delivered fully online and asynchronously. The more demanding scheduling constraint is the field practicum requirement: NMHU’s MSW requires 900–1,000 supervised field hours at an approved placement site (450–500 for Advanced Standing), typically completed across two academic years of field coursework. Practicum placements are generally arranged to accommodate working students, but they require regular availability during normal social services business hours. Planning your practicum site selection and scheduling conversations with your field supervisor well before the placement year is strongly recommended for employed students.
