Beyond price, the key differentiator is the combination of ACBSP accreditation, a one-year completion timeline, small class sizes with a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and one-on-one faculty advising — features that many lower-cost programs sacrifice for scale. NMHU has also received a Best Bang for the Buck recognition from Washington Monthly Magazine, which evaluates programs on outcomes and value rather than prestige alone.
NMHU’s business department hosts guest speakers and alumni events throughout the year, and online students can participate alongside their on-campus peers. Building relationships with students from across the country also expands your professional network in ways that a locally-focused program may not.
Traditional law enforcement training programs focus on tactical and procedural skills for entry-level roles. An online bachelor’s in organizational leadership takes a broader view — developing the strategic, managerial, and ethical competencies needed to lead departments and agencies, not just work within them. The online format also means you don’t have to interrupt your career or relocate to advance your education.
Rather than focusing purely on theory, NMHU’s MBA curriculum uses real business scenarios to develop your analytical and managerial judgment. This approach means you practice making decisions under conditions that mirror actual workplace challenges — in finance, operations, ethics, and multicultural leadership — before you face them professionally.
Clinical social work training is relational by nature. The cohort model means you move through the entire program with the same group of students, building trust and community over time. This mirrors the kind of collaborative, team-based practice you’ll engage in as a clinical social worker, and it also provides a built-in peer support network through the challenges of the program.
The traditional MSW program includes 16 core courses, four focus courses, and two field practicums for a total of 24 classes. The advanced standing MSW track consists of seven core courses, four focus courses, and one field practicum for a total of 13 classes, reducing the total credit hours from 63 to 32.
The program awards up to 95 transfer credits for your associate degree and valid RN license, meaning you enter the program with the majority of your credits already applied. Only 32 credits of additional nursing coursework are required to earn your BSN — dramatically reducing the time and cost compared to starting a bachelor’s program from the beginning.
The curriculum bridges the gap between hands-on field experience and formal management competency. You’ll develop skills in strategic thinking, personnel management, and policy analysis — the exact capabilities agencies look for when selecting directors, chiefs, and emergency management coordinators.

Your cohort journey begins with the new student orientation (conducted through Zoom) on the Friday and Saturday before the start of the semester.

ACBSP (Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs) accreditation signals that the program meets rigorous quality standards in business education. It can matter to employers who distinguish between accredited and non-accredited MBA programs, and it is a requirement for certain transfer credit arrangements with other accredited institutions.
CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) accreditation means the program meets nationally recognized standards for nursing education quality. It matters because graduate school programs and many employers specifically require a degree from a CCNE-accredited institution as a baseline credential.
A cohort means that you move through your coursework with the same group of students, allowing you to foster a community. Find out more about learning online at New Mexico Highlands.

A BAS is a degree completion program that bridges technical or vocational training with academic coursework. Unlike a traditional bachelor’s that starts from scratch, the BAS is designed for students who already hold an associate degree, vocational certificate, or equivalent training. It allows you to apply what you’ve already learned toward a full bachelor’s degree without repeating foundational coursework.
The optional cognate concentration allows you to supplement your FNP degree with nine graduate-level medical or non-nursing courses focused on a specialty area. It is worth considering if you intend to work in a specialty setting or want to differentiate yourself in a competitive job market. The concentration adds credits and time to the program but can expand your scope and earning potential.

Clinical social work involves providing direct mental health and behavioral health services — including assessment, diagnosis, therapy, and treatment planning — to individuals, families, and groups. It goes beyond general social work practice, which may focus more broadly on case management, community organizing, or policy advocacy, to include the delivery of structured clinical interventions.
Healthcare administration involves managing the operational, financial, and strategic aspects of hospitals, clinics, health systems, and related organizations. An MBA with a healthcare concentration combines core business competencies — finance, leadership, ethics, organizational behavior — with healthcare-specific content, preparing graduates for management roles across the sector.
Organizational leadership in public safety focuses on developing the management, communication, and decision-making skills needed to lead teams in high-stakes environments like law enforcement, fire services, and emergency management. As public safety agencies face increasing complexity, leaders with formal training in organizational management are better equipped to improve outcomes for the communities they serve.
The ASWB (Association of Social Work Boards) exam is the standardized national licensing exam for social workers. Upon completing NMHU’s MSW program, graduates have the degree required to apply for licensure as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and are prepared to sit for the ASWB exam. Note that LMSW is not the same as Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) — clinical licensure requires additional supervised post-graduate hours.

A general leadership degree teaches broad organizational principles, while this program contextualizes those same concepts within public safety ecosystems — including homeland security, public administration, budget management specific to agencies, and the ethical and legal frameworks unique to emergency services and law enforcement environments.
An RN provides direct patient care under the supervision of physicians or other providers. A Family Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who can independently assess, diagnose, order tests, prescribe medications, and manage patient care across the lifespan — from pediatrics to geriatrics. FNPs often serve as primary care providers, particularly in underserved or rural areas.
The advanced standing MSW track offers a streamlined one-year completion option compared to the traditional two-year duration for full-time students. For those opting for part-time enrollment, the advanced standing MSW extends to a year and a half, while the traditional MSW extends to three years.
Most of our classes have a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio.
The traditional MSW program requires 928 field practicum hours across four semesters — completed in blocks of at least four continuous hours. NMHU works with students to identify field placement opportunities in their local area. A limited number of virtual placements are available, though most are in-person. Students in rural areas are encouraged to connect with an advisor early to plan their placement.

Research has linked BSN-prepared nurses to better patient outcomes, including lower mortality rates and fewer medication errors. Many Magnet-designated hospitals and health systems now require or strongly prefer BSN credentials for hiring and promotion. Earning your BSN positions you for a wider range of clinical, leadership, and specialty roles.
